This week, we will be working on description. As we discussed in class, you will be using two opposing points of view to describe the same scene. What are some steps that you can take in the prewriting process to make sure that each viewpoint, both positive and negative, is followed? Which viewpoint do you think will be easier? Why do you think so?
Some of the steps that I have taken to approach both the positives and negatives of my picture was by: first, analyzing the obvious good and bad features. Then, I brainstormed why the same picture has two separate emotional ties to them. The view point that I find the easiest to describe is the positive attractions. I believe that the human mind tends to gravitate to the things that their eyes find attractive.
ReplyDeleteThat's great that you analyzing first and then putting them into good and bad features. I really like how you brainstormed them together. I feel like this assignment is going to be tricky to most people including myself. To have a better understand how to put both of them together in one I'm going to read the chapter. I want to have a better understanding on how I can start on my assignment. I hope your paper does well.
DeleteI think you bring up a really good point. By brainstorming why the same picture has two seperate emotional ties to them, we can open our minds into viewing them in a different way then we normally would. I think that's why this assignment can get a little tricky. Our minds audimadically see it a certain way so in order to change that, its a little tough.
DeleteI agree, with the fact that most people do tend to stare at the things that look more attractive to them. I also believe though that people tend to do the same thing with things they don't like or something completely hideous. This is a really good way to brainstorm, when I read your blog helped me getter a better understanding of some steps I can take in order to separate the good features from the bad.
DeleteI agree with you that you have to look at the picture from a negative point and a positive point, it seems easier if you think about it one way and then stop, clear your mind and think of the picture the other way. I felt it was easier to talk about the positive things in my picture because I thought about it in a positive way.
DeleteI think this is going to be my favortie writing assessment. I like that we are taking one picture and turning it into positive and negative effects. I think our minds automatically try to make the best of every situation so this will be interesting. The first step I did for my picture was analzy the bigger objects that stood out to me. Then, I brainstormed all the good and bad details in the photo. I believe the positive viewpoint was easier for me to grasp and write about in my descriptive paragraph.
ReplyDelete-Shannon Hunt
This is probably my favorite too. I agree with you that we try to look at all the positives in every picture so it was easier to make the positive side. I made a list so that way I knew I covered the positive and the negative view points.
Deletewow, you gave me some good direction to writing this description paragraph. Taking a photo will defiently help , also i saw that others made lists on positve and negative points of the scene. This is also my favorite writing assignment as well!
DeleteThe steps I have taken for the descriptive prewrite is to compare and contrast. I have to take what i think are positives of my room and think of what someone different of me would think, someone with a very different opinion, and take on it. The positive I feel will be easier because my room is made up the way I want it to be. I think the negative side will be a little more fun though, to think of negative things to say about my own room.
ReplyDelete- Rene Abrego
Rene-I really like your idea of having someone else look at your room that has a very different option, and take on it. I’m going to use your idea as well. I also, believe is hard to say negative things about a space we created. I think we might be able to capture a few things but not enough to create a paragraph.
Delete-Alejandra Sierra
DeleteI’m going to take your advice and start by describing my bedroom thru the outside and working myself in. I believe the negative will be hard for me since I really enjoy my bedroom. I’m going to refer to my book for help because I believe this will be a hard paragraph to write for me.
ReplyDelete-Alejadra Sierra
I completely agree with you Alejadra! I was having a hard time picking what I wanted to describe and still havent really picked anything specific. Even with using my book to help me I'm still having some trouble. So I totally know how your feeling right now!
DeleteBefore I started writing my descriptive paragraph for this week's class I first picked what I wanted to describe. I then wrote positive and negative adjectives down on a piece of paper that would describe the picture I had in front of me. For me, thinking positive was a lot easier than describing the picture negetively. I guess it would really just depend on the picture and how you see it from your own perspective. This descriptive paragpraph was a little difficult for me. Describing what is in the picture was pretty easy but using those descriptive adjectives and being creative with it was hard.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Brittney for me choosing my positive features was so much easier then having to chose the negative,I had to get help from a co worker I asked him to tell me what he saw that was negative from what I was writing. I don't know if its the fact that hes a boy but he come up with a lot negative things.I also agree that using the descriptive adjectives did make it much harder but reading through the chapter helped me .
DeleteBefore I start on my prewriting process I will first read the chapters to help me to a clear picture on what I'll be working on my assignment then after that I'll brainstorm both positive and negative.I'm not sure which is going to be easier positive or negative but if I had to guess I would think positive would be easier because it comes natural and it's easier to process in our brains. I truly belive both viewpoint are probably going to be tricky because it'll let our brains think about it for couple days to make sure we understand out assignments and hopefully I'll put in a good usage.
ReplyDeleteI did the exact thing review the chapter and see which idea will be the best. It’s true it was easier to list all the positive things. It helps to start early and think about it and not leave it for the last minute.

Before i start on my pre-writting process i will first start off by brain storming both negative and positive. That will help me get my brain going by making sure i have all the ideas that come to mind with out leaving anything out. I believe both negative and positive will be difficult for me having two contradicting topics might be hard to write about in detail.
ReplyDelete-Whendy martinez
Whendy that's a good start by brainstorming first. I think negative is probably going to be easier then positive because it comes to our brains faster. I totally agree with you that both positive and negative it's going to be difficult just in general. Don't forget to go to the writing center they can be great help especially for this writing assignment. Hope your paper goes well, and I'm looking forward reading it.
DeleteBefore I started my per-writing process, I had to choose what my paragraphs were going to be on. I had to make sure that it was a good Object that can be viewed in a very positive way or in a negative way. I separated the Good from the bad which was kind of hard but once i had that done everything just felt like it fell into place. I think that writing the positive was easier for me because there is always more good than bad in things , well at least that's what i think. Thinking about the bad features was the hardest step because after choosing out the good fetures it was hard to go back and choose all the bad. It was kind of tricky for me. but reading the chapter did help.
ReplyDeletei agree. i believe finding the negative points will be the most difficult point in this assignment. Im actually pretty nervous. I need more guidance so im going to the writing lab for more help.
DeleteFirst step to take is to pinpoint the subject that will be described, then from there brainstorm the positive and negative descriptive words and logical and illogical thoughts. I find this assignment will be a bit challenging for myself as I at times have difficulties with seeing both sides of the spectrum. However, taking these actions, I feel I can get to the point of describing the same scene in two different viewpoints.
ReplyDelete-CRYSTAL KANE
Steps in writing a descriptive paragraph are fairly easy. i would first begin with finding all of the positives about the scene your describing. For me personally, it is easier to write about positive things as apposed to the negative things. Making bullet point on a piece of paper then jotting down as many things as you can describe about the picture is very affective. Once you have gotten all of your ideas down on paper, all you need to do is put them into sentence form.
ReplyDeleteAs I was prewriting my description paragraph I was thinking that I was going to have to have a negative view point and a positive. I decided that making a list was probably the best way, one list that shows the positive things as well as a list with the negative things. This helped out a lot because it made it easier to make sure both viewpoints were demonstrated. I also had to think of my image exactly the same so I actually took a picture of it that way I can remember exactly what I am looking at, this helped a lot. In my case I enjoy my scene so I think that the positive viewpoint will be easier. I think that it differs with different scenes weather or not the positive side or negative side is easier to prove because it reflects your opinion.
ReplyDeletethe best way to prepare yourself for this writing assignment is to first find your scene you will be describing and take a picture or video. then list put the positive points in one list then on another list write the negative points. reading the chapter and reviewing the descriptive paragraphs really help. also going to the writing lab and having the tutors look over your writing is a good deal.
ReplyDeleteSyhney, I think that is a great idea. I have never thought of taking a picture of the scene or finding a picture of the scene, so that I can use it to create a list of positive and negative words. It doesn't necessary have to be a scene. It can be anything, a person, a thing, or an event.

In order to make sure each view point is followed I started with making a chart. The left column showing positive descriptions and the right showing negative descriptions. Then, I would further separate each description into the different senses we have, such as, see, hear, smell, taste, and feel.
ReplyDeleteI think it was easier from the positive viewpoint. I think this is based of off what scene you are describing. For instance, I described the beach in Huntington Beach. There are many positive details about visiting the beach on a nice summer day.
That's a good technic to separate everything on sight, hear, smell, tast and feel. I feel like everyone chose something they like which made it easier to have a positive effect over negative.

Some of the steps that I took before I did the prewriting was analyzing the options that I had on page 94 and see which one was easier for me to describe positively and negatively. In the prewriting I brainstormed a list of the positive and negative. The viewpoint that was easier for me was positive the list was longer than the negative list. I’m writing about my favorite place and when you like something it’s so hard point out the bad stuff about it.
ReplyDelete-Gabriela Olivares
The steps I would take to write two sides of a story is brain storming the pros and cons. I would make a list of the Pros of the story and then I would make list of the cons of the story. then I would put the story together as one.
ReplyDelete-Laura Valdez
I think you have a great idea on how to approach this assignment. Thinking of the pros and cons of something is one great way to write a description. It reminds me of the time when my high school history teacher introduced me to Proposition 209. He gave the whole class copies of articles describing the pros and cons of Proposition 209. Another suggestion is to read articles about the pros and cons of certain issues such as on cloning and using marijuana for medical use.

Some of the steps I will take in my description paragraph is to brainstorm for ideas that are both negative and positive. When I brainstorm for ideas, I will be using a list of adjectives and adverbs for the negative and positive description of a place. In my perspective, it is easier to describe something in a positive way because I always want to express positive things to the reader, instead of negative things to the reader. One other thing, I will do in my prewriting is to use the list of adjectives and adverbs in sentences, so that I can start writing my description paragraph.
