This week, we discussed the importance of audience and purpose when writing. As you craft your narrative, who is your target audience? How does this inform the story that you are telling? What is the purpose of this assignment, and what will be the point of your narrative?

DeleteThe purpose of this assignment is for me to understand why I'm writing and who I'm writing to. I understand that writing is like writing a journal it's a freewrite. When I'm writing I want to target on my readers because they are the most important people because they are the ones who are reading my writing. This informs the story I'm trying to tell the readers because I want them to get involved and really get the feel for the story I want to write about. Without readers there wouldn't be a story to write about because readers are the ones who decides whether or not they enjoyed the stories. I believe the purpose of writing is for me to understand the meaning of writing and how I can improve my writing skills and what other methods I can use when I write because after all I want to be a great writer.
DeleteI completely agree with you! I think it is so important to understand what you are writing about and to who. There have been so many times where I have no idea what I'm even talking about and that is seen in those paragraphs. I brought up the point about getting the reader involved too. In my opinion that goes along with understanding what your writing because if you dont, then neither will anyone else. Letting someone else read it helps me find those confusing parts so that I can better help my paper.
DeleteFor this specific narrative assignment, I believe that the target audience is not only fellow classmates, but you as the professor. Because we are peer editing we have to make this paragraph something that our fellow classmates want to read and get engaged in reading. In my opinion, writing to a target audience is the purpose of this assignment because it allows us to practice these skills while writing about something we enjoy. Within this narrative we are trying the get the reader involved in the story as they read it, feeling like they are experiencing it for themselves. It creates a fun way for the writer and reader to get involved and have fun at the same time. If the writer is not engaged then the reader definitely won’t be. The point of my narrative is to practice talking to a specific audience and to have fun with my paragraph so the reader is too.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that this assignment allows us to pratice these skills while writing about something we enjoy. That's the whole point we are trying to get the readers involved and have them experience what we are trying to write about. I also agree with you about if the writer is not engaged then the reader definitely won't be. Remember whoever is reading your paper they have to get the feel for your paper because after all you are the writer and you don't want to bored your audience or else they will not be interesting reading your paper. You want to amaze your readers and also to yourself.

In this assignment my audience is going to be my fellow classmates because I know they will be the ones reading this narrative. I think of this assignment as a short story, basically as if I was telling one of my friends what had happen when I was in 1st grade. I think it is important to know who the readers are in the assignment because you do not want to be using huge college type words when you are writing something for 5 year olds to read on there first day of kindergarten, or vice versa. The point of this assignment is to practice targeting an audience and tell them a story. This is an important assignment because it helps us as writers, be able to be more comfortable in targeting an audience so that the readers enjoy and understand our writing. My paragraph is going to be about my favorite childhood memory like we wrote about in class.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you it's helpful to know who your audience is that way you know how to tell your story. I understand what you mean because knowing who is going to read your essay you feel more comfortable. As we progress our writing styles will need to better since will have to target a more professional audience.

For my narrative, my target audience will be my peers. My reason for choosing this target audience is to better relate. When I am reading peoples papers in class, I would prefer it to be targeted towards each others peers versus, say a more professional atmosphere. The way I can better relate is we are all beginning to learn writing styles, and I dont think it would be fair to write at a higher level than the peer audience. I am definitely not saying people are not capable of reading such. I feel it will bring ease and better comprehension. I know when I am not able to understand something, I tend to get flustered and anxious. I wouldn't want anyone to feel that way when trying to peer edit a paper. So, that is why my target audience is my peers.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think you should always have a purpose when writing. I don't completely agree with writing to please your audience. If your telling a story you should be aware of your audience and write the story so they understand it. If the audience is satisfied with your story thats their choice. I think writing just to please your audience is a waste of time. The story is written from your thoughts not for other peoples thoughts. As i craft my narrative my target audience is my fellow class mates. The purpose of this narrative paragraph assignment is to write a paragraph that tells a story. In my narrative paragraph I will be writing on an event that changed my life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you mostly. I believe everyone has their own opinions and no matter what we say or do someone is always going to agree or disagree. I think it is a good idea to be aware ahead of time of who your audience is that way you can write to the best of your ability so that they understand it in the best way possible. But to write for other peoples liking is a waste of time. It's our job to state our thoughts and how we feel then it's up to them whether they approve or not.

The target audience for this narrative is my peers and my teacher. The narrative needs to be interesting and engaging readers to read it. It matters who your audience is if it was a kindergarten they wouldn’t want to read a whole page full of words with no pictures. Knowing that it’s to college students and a professor it needs to be well written with minor mistakes. The purpose of the assignment is to be able to tell a story and allow it to follow you don’t want it to sound like a grocery list. The point of my narrative is an event in my childhood that changed me as a person.
ReplyDeleteThe target audience for this narrative would have to be my classmates, my teacher, and myself. This narrative must have to mean something to you deeply, just like all your writings. If you do not have passion in your writing your reading won't either. The point of this narrative is to engage your audience into a memory that changed your life, that molded you in some way. By using great structure, detail, and a timely order you will succeed. This narrative is a chance to relate to your reader on a whole other level, from honest, personal moments in each others lives.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on your target audience. I like that you said narratives have to mean something to you deeply that's well said. Passion in writing is so important as well as the readers. You want them to get involved with your writing and have them get the feeling that what you went through so they can feel it too and be blown aways with your writing. Having a great structure, detail, and a timely order will help you improve your writing as well as finding mistakes on your writing. I urge you to keep going to the writing center because you'll improve on your writing.

The importance in audience is to find my story interesting enough to continue reading. My purpose when writing is to tell a story you have learned from in life or something you find amusing. I will write about a childhhod story as we discussed in class. In this occasion my target audience will be my classmates, and my teacher(Lugene Rosen) whom will grade my story. This assignment will help me get comfortable in writing. There is always going to be a point in your story as a narrator. I'm looking forward to having fun as we learn!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with you Jannie. I agree that the story should be interesting enough for the audience to read. One purpose of writing is to capture the audience's attention. A few ways to capture the audience's attention is to provide a hook, provide the audience a purpose for reading the paper, and try to convince the audience by providing evidence.

I believe our target audience for this assignment is not just classmates or Professor Rose, but anyone at all who reads our writing. Yes, this is an english 099 assignment, but that is not the only thing we are writing for. We should be focusing on being prepared for any audience. Also, while we are writing to read it aloud to ourself and act as we are "The Audience". This way we can see it from a different perspective and visualize what needs work and what does not. The purpose of this assignment is to become better writers' of course, but specifically in a narrative format. Also to know how to write for a specific audience.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with you that we need to write to any type of audience. However, there is one aspect that I do not agree with you. In college papers, you are writing for a educated audience. If you are a newspaper writer, you might want to write for an average person, who might not have a college degree. Also, if you talk in a higher language to the average person, they will not be able to understand you.

I think that the target audience for this assignment aren't just the classmates or the Professor. It could also be our friends as well or anyone that wants to know a little more about our past.I would want the person reading my assignment to be interested right away, so I would have to make sure my topic sentence is very interesting. The point of my narrative would be to try to make my story very clear and have the events in a good order that way I wont confuse the reader in any way.I would also like my reader to understand the lesson I learned in the experience I had as a child.
ReplyDeleteI think you bring up a very good point. The audience is not only our fellow students and teacher, but it could be anyone. It is important to know who your target audience is so that you can alter your paragraph in order to get the most out of that specific paragraph. It should be done in a clear and understanding way.
DeleteOne of the most important aspect about writing a paper or a story is to consider a target audience. The following are examples of a target audience: teenagers, college students, and house wives. For my paper, I chose college students as my target audience because I am in a college setting. The type of audience informs the story I will be telling by making me more aware of the type of people I am going to be writing to in the narrative. Basically, I will have to identify myself with the audience, so that I can be clear on my paper. In my narrative, I will make a point about continuing on in life with a positive attitude or learning something new about life. The whole purpose of a narrative is to attract the audiences' attention, and explain why a certain event or moment in life is significant.

The target audience for this narrative assignment is my classmates and professor. Although, I do agree it should be readable to our friends and other peers that would like to get to know a little more about one another. My goal is to inform everyone by grabbing their attention at the beginning so they are interested in what I have to say next. I think the best way to do this is to read out loud to yourself or have someone else read your writing back to you so you get another prospective on your writing. I understand you want to make your story very clear and to the point so people aren't confused on what the topic of our story is about. The purpose of this writing promt is to explain an event or action that took place in our life that is meaningful. Also for the reader to imagine and feel the same experience as we did in our childhoood.

Sorry so late responding. my target audience for my narrative assignment is anyone that has grown up. Mine is going to be about junior high, and how it affects you during life.Since most people are probably like me, who have not felt so confident at 12 years old, my goal is to make you laugh about how we all share the same experiences.I think the purpose of this assignment is to really organize the thought process into telling a story. Making sure you have a beginning, middle ,and end. My point to my narrative will be that we all go through a similiar experience in life, no matter race, religion,or sex.
